Overview of the Unit

The Medical Surgical area at Valley Hospital Medical Center includes several treatment areas, including:

4 Tower is a 53-bed medical surgical unit, including 12 beds with capability for close observation via camera monitoring. The staff provides care for general medical and surgical care such as pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, neurological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal and infectious diseases.

3 Tower is a 53-bed medical surgical unit that is designated for inpatient stroke treatments. The staff provides care for general medical and surgical care, including continuous EEG monitoring, pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, neurological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal and infectious diseases. Long-term ventilator care is also provided in 3 Tower.

2 North is a 32-bed surgical unit. The area allows the staff to provide post-surgical care to patients after general surgery, orthopedic surgery and GU/GYN surgery. Patients also receive medical care for respiratory, cardiovascular, infections, neurological, endocrine, and gastrointestinal disorders.

Intermediate Care Unit is a 32-bed intermediate (step down) unit. Patients receive care for post-coronary artery bypass graft surgery, cardiovascular surgery, pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, neurological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal and infectious diseases that require intermediate care and treatment.

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Certified nurse aide
  • Camera technician
  • Sitters
  • Unit secretary

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to maintain the following qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse with current licensure in the state of Nevada
  • BLS on medical/surgical units
  • BLS and ACLS on intermediate care unit
  • Nurse graduates are welcome

What you can expect when working on this unit

If you join the nursing staff at VHMC you will be assigned a preceptor for your orientation, and you will be assigned E-learning modules to complete during this process. The nursing staff works 12-hour shifts (7 am to 7 pm, or 7 pm to 7 am) and use a web-based scheduling program called ShiftHound. VHMC uses a patient-centered care delivery model, and incorporates the patient's family with the treatment plan whenever possible.

Teamwork on the unit is essential in providing care and treatment to our patients. You can expect to work with professionals who are innovative, compassionate, customer-service focused and possess effective communication skills. The staff is an advocate for patients and must use critical thinking skills daily.
