Salaries

Residents/Fellows are paid every 2 weeks (26 pay periods per year). There is no state income tax withheld in Nevada, increasing the take-home pay.

Benefits

House staff will receive the following benefits, subject to the same conditions applicable to Hospital exempt employees and the terms and conditions of the Hospital’s current benefit plans and or policies. Unless otherwise specified, all benefits will be effective on the 31st day of employment. The benefits listed below may be unilaterally modified by the Hospital at the discretion of the Hospital Administration.

Health Insurance: The Hospital will provide comprehensive health insurance to the Housestaff and their family through the UHS Benefits Program applicable to hospital employees at a reasonable premium price. Coverage shall begin on the 31st day of employment.

Dental Insurance: The Hospital offers a dental plan, including some orthodontic coverage, for a reasonable premium price.

Vision Insurance: The Hospital offers coverage which includes annual vision examination, glasses and contacts for reasonable premium, co-payments, and deductibles.

Long-Term Disability Insurance: Housestaff are eligible for Long-Term Disability when they become seriously ill or otherwise disabled (Non-occupational). Housestaff may choose between a 90 day and a 180 day waiting period for benefit payments, with premium costs dependent on the selection.

Life Insurance: The Hospital will provide coverage in the amount of 1x annual salary at no cost. Housestaff may opt for additional amounts up to 7x annual salary with a maximum of $500,000. Dependent life insurance is also available at group rates.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment: 1x annual earnings.

Worker's Compensation: The Hospital will provide Worker's Compensation Insurance to Housestaff, at no cost, beginning the first day of employment.

Paid Leave: Housestaff are allowed 160 PTO hours total per year. PTO is defined as time off for vacation, holidays, professional or illness. PTO is not cumulative from year to year and requires the Program Director’s and/or DME’s approval. Unused PTO will not be paid out at the end of the academic year. Housestaff will accrue ELB consistent with Hospital policies and plan.

Unpaid Leave: Other medical or personal unpaid leave may be granted with the approval of the Program Director, consistent with ACGME and American Osteopathic Association regulations, as applicable, only after the Housestaff has exhausted all of his or her PTO benefits. Makeup time and/or repeat of training will be determined by the Program Director and GME Administration.

Short-Term Disability: Short-term disability is offered at Housestaff cost with a 7 day elimination period. Two options are currently available: 12-week plan that covers the 90-day period of disability and 25-week plan that covers the 180-day period of disability.

Professional Liability Insurance: The Hospital agrees to provide professional liability insurance coverage for the Housestaff for the duration of his/her training. Such coverage will provide legal defense and protection against awards from claims reported or filed during or after the completion of the Program, if, and only if, the alleged acts or omissions of the Housestaff are within the scope of the Program. The coverage provided will be consistent with the Hospital’s professional liability coverage provided to other residents. An extended reporting period, i.e., tail coverage, will be provided by Hospital as needed.

Meals: Meals will be provided while on duty at the Hospital. Hospital reserves the right to specify dollar limits.

Lab Coats Scrubs: Two personalized lab coats will be provided. Scrubs are also provided by the Hospital for OB/GYN, Surgery, and Emergency Department Rotations.

Licensing, Registration, Professional Fees: The following are covered: Fees for Nevada special training medical licensing; AOA membership.

Pagers: Pagers will be provided to all Housestaff

UHS Stock Purchase Plan: Housestaff are eligible to purchase Universal Health services stock at a 10 percent discount of the current market price through payroll deductions from the 31st day of employment pursuant to Hospital and UHS policies as amended.

401K: Housestaff are eligible to participate in a 401K tax deferred investment plan for retirement from the 31st day of employment pursuant to Hospital and UHS policies as amended.

Flexible Spending Account: Housestaff are eligible to contribute to a pre-tax Health Care (or Day Care) flexible spending account after 30 days of employment pursuant to Hospital and UHS policies as amended.

Hospital Discount: Medical expense discounts will be given for both inpatient and outpatient medical services at Valley Hospital Medical Center as defined by Hospital policies and as amended.

Employee Assistance Program: Provided by an Outside Vendor. Face-to-face consultations up to 3 sessions per occurrence. Unlimited telephonic assistance.  Confidentiality will be maintained except as provided by law.

Educational Support

Educational Leave: Paid leave for the COMLEX III examination with prior approval by Program Director.

COMLEX: COMLEX III fees are covered one time. A COMLEX failure requiring a retake shall be the financial responsibility of the Housestaff.

Educational Stipend: The educational stipend is not to exceed $2200 over the duration of the residency training program. For three (3) year residencies, a maximum of $1100 per annum for PGY 2 and $1100 for PGY 3. For four (4) year programs, a maximum of $733 per annum for each year PGY 2, 3 and 4. For five (5) year residencies, a maximum of $550 per annum for PGY 2, 3, 4 and 5. Fellowship stipends are $733 per annum for PGY 4, 5, and 6. Interns do not receive the stipend; they receive COMPLEX III reimbursement.

Stipend is to be used for program relevant educational materials such as textbooks, or board review courses or materials. GME office has authority to approve or decline reimbursement of expenses.

Conference Stipend: This clause is specific to housestaff in the residency programs noted below that require conference attendance:

  • Internal Medicine: Conference stipend of $1,250 once during the three year residency (PGY 1-3) for an ACOI approved conference per standards requirement.
  • Family Medicine: Conference stipend of $1,250 once during PGY 2 or PGY 3 for an ACOFP approved conference per standards requirement.
  • Neurology: Conference stipend of $1,250 once during PGY 2-4 for an approved program per standards requirement.
  • Orthopedics: Conference stipend of $1,250 once during PGY 4 for an AOAO approved program per standards requirement.
  • Critical Care/Pulmonary: Conference stipend of $1,250 once during PGY 4-6 for approved conference per standards requirement.
  • Gastroenterology: Conference stipend of $1,250 once during PGY 4-6 for approved conference per standards requirement.
