Transfusion-Free Medicine and Surgery
Eliminating the Risks of Donated Blood
Although blood is carefully screened, it still carries the potential risk for HIV, hepatitis and other blood-borne illnesses and complications. The Transfusion-Free Medicine & Surgery (TFMS) Program at Valley Hospital may be available for patients who wish to avoid using donated blood because of medical concerns or religious beliefs.
“Transfusion-Free” means medical or surgical treatment without the use of blood or blood products. Blood loss often occurs during surgery. A Transfusion-Free Program strives to minimize blood loss through special blood conservation methods.
Patients who are interested are encouraged to become acquainted with primary care physicians who are experienced in bloodless medicine. Bloodless techniques and procedures are covered by most health plans, including HMOs, PPOs, Medicare and Medicaid.
Surgery Without Blood
Transfusions During bloodless surgery, our team of physicians and nurses use specialized surgical equipment and medical techniques to help prevent or minimize blood loss. Patients may also receive medication to stimulate the body’s own production of blood cells.
Depending on the patient’s needs, the following bloodless techniques and procedures may be used during surgery:
- Specialized devices that filter and return the patient’s own blood in a continuous circuit
- Cauterizing surgical instruments
- Medicines that increase red blood cell production and encourage clotting
- Blood-dilution therapies
- Minimally-invasive surgical techniques
