Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery

Valley Hospital Medical Center offers robot-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® Xi™ Robotic Surgical System. This advanced technology gives surgeons more flexibility and precision than ever before.

Doctors at Valley Hospital may use the da Vinci system to perform lifesaving procedures for:

  • Gynecological cancer
  • Urological surgery
  • Colorectal surgery
  • 3D lung diagnostics
  • General surgery

Benefits of robotic surgery

Robotic surgery uses minimally invasive techniques that can help create better outcomes for patients when compared to open surgery. Instead of making large incisions that accompany traditional open surgery, surgeons get unobstructed surgical views and expanded ranges of motion using the da Vinci robotic system.

New robot-assisted Ion bronchoscopy diagnostics from Intuitive are minimally invasive procedures. The Ion system for lung biopsy, for example, offers superior accuracy and may detect lung cancer nodules less than one centimeter wide.

Patients who undergo robotic-assisted testing and surgery may benefit from:

  • Reduced postoperative pain or trauma to the body
  • Less blood loss and reduced need for transfusions
  • Lower risk of infection or other complications
  • Quicker, less invasive biopsy technology
  • More efficient recovery and minimal scarring
  • Shorter hospital stays

How does a robotic procedure work?

Surgeons operate the da Vinci system at a computer console close to you where they control the robotic arms. Surgeons use the sophisticated targeting system. With pinpoint accuracy, the surgeon makes a series of small incisions, or ports, in the area. The arms are then inserted into the body.

One arm has a tiny video camera and the other two arms are equipped with special surgical instruments. The camera provides 3D, high-definition images of the surgical site from inside the body, which can be magnified 10 times. During the operation, the surgeon has clearer enhanced vision and superior movement of the robotic arms. Less invasive surgeries can improve patient outcomes.

Are you a candidate for robotic surgery?

Not all procedures can be done robotically and not all patients are candidates for robotic surgery. Talk to your physician about minimally invasive surgical options.
