Critical Care / Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship is a full-time, 36-month training program that includes didactic learning, patient care training and procedural training.  The program is hospital based.  Valley Hospital has excellent patient volume and scope, and provides a superior environment for training in diagnosis and management of complex and common disease processes in a wide variety of patients.

Ambulatory experiences are structured, supervised, and adequate to develop skills in ambulatory patient management in a continuity of care environment.  The Continuity Clinic is adjacent to the Hospital with supervision by the Program Director and faculty.  Fellows develop their own patient panels and follow them throughout their training.

The Fellowship follows the requirements set forth in the AOA Standards.  At all times, the fellow’s patient care activities are supervised, monitored, and evaluated by designated faculty.  The Program Director keeps close contact with faculty and fellows to support, advise, and evaluate their progress.  OPP will be incorporated into the program as outlined in the Core Competencies.

The Fellowship, GME, and the Hospital administration recognize the primary importance of education in the fellowship.  All rotations, didactics, and work assignments are made based on educational need and benefit, rather than on concerns for service to the institution.

The Fellowship will adhere to the AOA policies and standards on supervision, performance evaluations and duty hours.  All institutional requirements set forth in the Standards for Pulmonary /Critical Care Medicine are met

Two fellows will be admitted to the program each year for a total of six fellows.  Development of teaching skills will be an integral aspect of training, with teaching and supervisory responsibilities for junior fellows, residents, and medical students.

Graduate Medical Education staff provides full administrative support for the Fellowship.  Valley Hospital provides salary, benefits, educational stipends and medical malpractice for the fellows.
