The Valley Hospital Medical Center Neurology Residency program is a comprehensive, organized training program that allows for progressive responsibility in caring for patients with neurologic disease in a variety of settings. The Neurology Residency provides resident training to prepare physicians for the independent practice of the high quality clinical neurology. Research and teaching are additional components of the program.

The primary goals of the program are:

• Education of residents for the independent practice of clinical neurology
• Provide neurologists for the Clark County community which currently has an acute shortage
• Provide coverage for the primary stroke center at Valley Hospital, and other patients with neurological disorders

Venkat Veerappan, MD serves as the Neurology Program Director and medical director of The Stroke Center at Valley Hospital, a primary stroke center accredited by The Joint Commission. The residency program faculty and residents will provide 100% neurology call coverage for the Emergency Department.

The Neurology program has a full didactic schedule which includes Noon Lectures, Grand Rounds, Board Review, Mortality and Morbidity, Journal Club and Morning Report. Some didactics such as Tumor Board are held in conjunction with the Internal Medicine program. Scholarly endeavors are an integral part of the program, with a research month is scheduled in the fourth year to complete a research paper suitable for publication.

The curriculum consists of four years of progressive clinical and didactic experience. The first year focuses on a strong base of internal medicine, medicine subspecialties, surgery, surgical subspecialties, emergency medicine, and critical care.

Additionally, first year residents have two months of inpatient neurology consulting service. During the following three years, residents spend several months each year on neurology.

Other rotations include Pediatric Neurology, EEG, EMG, Neuroradiology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

NEUROLOGY ROTATIONS

OGME 1 – Preliminary Internship

• 2 months Neurology inpatient consult service
• 1 month Emergency Medicine
• 1 month Surgery selective (vascular, neurosurgery, orthopedics etc)
• 1 month Elective (with Program Director approval)
• Continuity clinic 1/2 day per week
• 7 months Internal Medicine to include:
  • 3 months IM (1 will be night rotation)
  • 1 month ICU
  • 1 month Cardiology
  • 2 months Elective Medicine

OGME 2

• 6 months Neurology inpatient consults service
• 1 month Neuro Pediatrics
• 1 month Neurosurgery
• 1 month EEG
• 1 month EMG
• 1 month Neuroradiology
• 1 month Psychiatry
• Continuity clinic 1/2 day per week

OGME 3

• 6 months Neurology inpatient consults service
• 1 month Pediatric Neurology
• 1 month EEG
• 1 month EMG
• 1 month Neuro-Ophthalmology (out-rotation)
• 1 month Infectious Disease
• 1 month PM & R
• Continuity clinic 1/2 day per week

OGME 4

• 6 months Neurology inpatient consults service
• 1 month Movement Disorders
• 1 month Pain Management
• 1 month Headache
• 1 month Neuropathology - longitudinal at Clark County Coroner's Office
• 3 months - Electives
• Continuity clinic 1/2 day per week

ELECTIVES
